Transferring credits in Vermont

Statute guarantees two tuition-free college courses before high school completion: neither the student nor the parent/guardian may be charged tuition. Tuition is paid to the public postsecondary institution (the CCV rate, 90% of that rate when CCV itself teaches, or 20% of the CCV rate when a secondary-school-employed instructor teaches), split 50/50 between the Next Generation Initiative Fund and the Education Fund. The statute covers tuition only and is silent on textbooks and materials; state payment is not made for more than two courses per student, though a school district may choose to pay for more.

Who can enroll. A Vermont resident who has completed grade 10 but has not received a high school diploma, and who is enrolled in a Vermont public school or career technical center, a designated public/approved independent school, an approved independent school the district pays tuition to, the Adult Diploma Program, or is a home study student. Dual enrollment must be in the student's personalized learning plan and both the secondary school and the postsecondary institution must find the student sufficiently prepared.
