Transferring credits in South Dakota

The student (or family) is billed directly by the college: the Board of Regents' statewide student site states students pay $78.48 per credit hour, which is one-half of the reduced HSDC rate in the BOR Tuition and Fee Schedule, plus all required textbooks and materials — the South Dakota Department of Education pays the other half. Concurrent Credit courses taught at the high school by a qualified high school teacher are $40 per credit hour (per sdbor.edu). RATE IN TRANSITION: the Regents approved a 2.4% increase for 2026-27 and South Dakota State University's dual credit page now lists $80.37 per credit, while the BOR statewide site, USD and Northern State still show $78.48 — confirm the current term's rate with the enrolling institution. Students who lose HSDC eligibility (academic suspension, or an F/W with a sub-2.5 BOR GPA without an approved waiver) pay the full dual credit rate, listed by USD as $156.96 per credit.

Who can enroll. South Dakota high school juniors and seniors only (including South Dakota-resident homeschool students in grades 11-12 with a signed MOU); eligibility starts in the fall of junior year and covers five semesters through senior year. For the six BOR universities (BHSU, DSU, NSU, SDSMT, SDSU, USD) seniors must rank in the upper half of their class OR have a 3.25 GPA OR score 21+ on the ACT; juniors must rank in the upper third OR have a 3.50 GPA OR score 24+ on the ACT, with ACT subscore or Accuplacer requirements for math and English. The four technical colleges (LATC, MTC, STC, WDTC) instead apply their own program-specific entry requirements.
