Transferring credits in North Dakota

North Dakota does NOT make dual credit free. NDDPI states plainly that tuition, fees, books and other costs are the student's responsibility. NDUS institutions charge a reduced dual-credit tuition rate, but that rate is set by each campus (it varies by institution and delivery method) and no uniform statewide per-credit dollar figure is published, so no number is asserted here. Two partial offsets exist: (1) Bank of North Dakota Dual Credit Assistance, which can cover application fees, tuition and fees, and books for up to two courses per academic year for approved students; and (2) the NDUS Dual-Credit Tuition Scholarship, a one-time retroactive award of $250 (one class), $500 (two classes) or $750 (3+ classes), capped at $750, paid to the student's college AFTER high school - it does not reduce what the family pays at the time the course is taken.

Who can enroll. Students in grades 10 through 12 may take dual credit courses. Enrollment requires written permission from the high school administrator and, in most cases, a minimum 3.0 GPA. Courses are taken through a two- or four-year institution of higher education, and the high school superintendent or designee must have a formal agreement with the postsecondary institution for the high school credit to be granted; instructors must meet Higher Learning Commission credential rules. The later NDUS Dual-Credit Tuition Scholarship is separate and requires the student to be a North Dakota resident who graduated from a North Dakota high school (or a qualifying bordering-state school) and to have completed at least one dual-credit course at a public, private, tribal or proprietary institution with a physical presence in North Dakota.
